Today on the suggestion of the national Unesco expert committee, the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs decided to accept the Demoscene as German intangible cultural heritage. The decision acknowledges the long and living tradition the Demoscene has in Germany, with Revision, Breakpoint, and Evoke among other demoparties shaping the landscape of major international gatherings of the demoscene for decades.
The Cologne-based association Digitale Kultur e.V. has made it. For the first time, the demoscene in NRW is a digital cultural form that has been nominated for the UNESCO lists of intangible world cultural heritage in Germany. Further hurdles still have to be overcome, the final confirmation at the federal level is due at the beginning of 2021.
Demosceners of Finland and Germany are launching the “Art of Coding” campaign to inscribe the Demoscene on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as a digital and social practice, which includes many core elements of the digital world. The campaign will be officially launched at the Nordic Game conference at May 23rd 2019. Digitale Kultur e.V. supports the campaign.
From August 16 to 18, Digitale Kultur e.V. is hosting the "Cologne Festival for Digital Culture": Evoke 2019. Around 500 guests are expected in the AbenteuerHallenKALK. The Evoke is the prelude to the "Cologne Gaming Week", in which the games trade fair "gamescom" also takes place.
